[NELSON HORATIO]: (1758-1805) British Admiral during the Napoleonic Wars, the victor of the Battle of Trafalgar, 1805. An exceptionally rare Memorandum Book as signed by John Scott (1764-1805) British Naval Officer, friend and confident to Horatio Nelson. Soft bound, leather cover, seventy-two pages, 8vo, with hand written title affixed to the front cover reading 'Memo Book of full Flag Pay, 1798'. Written in Scotts hand over two pages, with the remainder blank, the book records 'An Account of Admiral Sir Charles Thompson's full Flag Pay 2nd September 1797 and the 17th March 1799.' The pages covering seven entries for Net Flag Pay and Net Compensation Pay and the Time Drawn. Toward the foot of the page, these entries have been signed (John Scott). With minor age related wear and mottling to the first two pages, not affecting text or signature. VG At Trafalgar, Scott was stationed on the quarter deck of Victory, next to Nelson. It would have been his job to record the battle but one of the first cannonballs to reach Victory, cut him in half, killing him immediately. When Nelson was shot an hour and half later he fell on the same spot and thus the blood that stained his breeches, now displayed in the National Maritime Museum, was Scott's not Nelson's as so often is supposed. Sir Charles Thompson (1740-1799) British Naval Officer, Member of Parliament.

A rare Delft dated dish, probably London the centre painted with a large crown and dated '1682', the broad border with a continuous band of tulips and stylised foliage, decorated in blue and yellow, 33cm (13in) diameter Provenance: Collected by the present vendor's grandfather in the 1930's. Literature: For a Brislington charger also dated "1682" with a portrait of King Charles II, see Frank Burton "English Delftware in the Bristol Collection", colour plate 3.30, page 26. Another charger dated 1682 and also produced at the Brislington pottery is in the collection at the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. This depicts Queen Catherine of Braganza flanked by 'K & R'. Other Notes: The significance of the 1682 date on a number of Delft pieces is uncertain. It could relate to the death of Prince Rupert of the Rhine who was a cousin of King Charles II and was Royalist commander during the English Civil War. He died at his house in Westminster on the 29th November 1682 and was a loyal supporter of the King.
