Which battery do I need for my old Nikkormat FTn? The instruction manual says is it's 1.3 volt mercury, but does not list a part number.
What’s the best camera for around $1500? These midrange cameras should have capable autofocus systems, lots of direct controls and the latest sensors offering great image quality. We recommend our favorite options.
An alternative to a Wein cell is a standard 625 zinc-air hearing aide battery (works on the same principle and gives the same voltage) - you can buy them in sets of 6 for about £3.50.
We don't usually test a product for ten years before reviewing it, but after a decade of using the Lowepro Photo Sport 300 AW II on an almost daily basis, Managing Editor Dale Baskin tells us why he loves this pack.

To close this loop, the Wein PX625/MRB625 battery works perfectly! My grandson just shot a roll of ILFORD 400 on my Nikkormat FTN, and will learn how to develop the film in his graphic art class. Pretty cool that the instructor is teaching his kids old school stuff.:-)

A faster sensor, improved autofocus and video see Nikon's third-gen mid-range full-framer go toe-to-toe against Canon's EOS R6 II and the Sony a7 IV. We feel its all-round ability lifts it to the top of the pile.
675 (not 625) zinc air Hearing aid batteries are 1.4v or 1.45v ( https://cpc.farnell.com/gp-batteries/gpza675-d6/battery-hearing-za675-pk6/dp/BT03959 ). The issue isn’t really the voltage, it’s the consistency. Alkaline batteries have a sloping discharge curve, whereas zinc air is pretty flat until it stops working (and dumps all that blue goo inside your camera ! ). Silver oxide is pretty flat too but a higher voltage again.
Tbh with colour negative film it doesn’t really matter - I’ve used a Canonet 28 fully automatic using a silver oxide cell with no problems, and a Nikormat FTN too.
Above $2500 cameras tend to become increasingly specialized, making it difficult to select a 'best' option. We case our eye over the options costing more than $2500 but less than $4000, to find the best all-rounder.

I've gotten tired of Wein cell batteries dying after a couple of months of use so I finally bought the MR-9 battery converter. It takes the common 1.5V 386 button cell battery, converts it to 1.35V and together inserts perfectly like the original PX625 size mercury battery for my Canon F-1. Bad part is the price, which is relatively expensive but it is the best long term solution.
