I haven’t put much thought into the app as it worked well last summer and greatly reduced my water usage after switching to a drip irrigation system. My greatest surprise was the garden never needed to be weeded with the drip system versus a sprinkler since only the plant got watered, not the surrounding soil.

It’s up on github, still playing with it but it’s been pretty stable for me. Let me know if you have any issues or feature requests/ideas. I’ve moved on to playing with hydroponics. I’m in the process of creating an arduino app to control the hydronics pump, take EC and PH readings and automatically add nutrients and balance PH. It also checks water temperature and water level an notifies when water level is low. Obviously my first attempt is an ebb and flow system. I’m coupling this with a Raspberry PI so I can integrate it with Smartthings.
Thanks for the info. Each of the Rachio zones showed up in smartthings just like a valve so just needed to get the sensor to trigger when it should turn on. After playing with it all weekend, I figured out that all of this was going to take some work to script. On Monday Spruce released their new irrigation controller that automatically integrates with moisture sensors and weather… and I should be able to sell my current controller and plantlinks and it only cost me about $100 more to get the integrated system. So that’s what I did. It’s going to be a couple of weeks before I get the new controller but at least it’s one less thing I have to work on. I can spend my time on getting smartthings and my security system to play nice.
For folks using above ground hoses, how about using Orbit’s “extra valve” coupled with a simple on/off switch device? I have a bunch of these, and I think they would only need a very low powered signal to operate since the control timers are battery powered.

I’m still having a lot of success with this device. If you hate it, I’ll take it want to buy 2 more before next spring
I know it’s been a while, but hopefully to help anyone else who has run into the same issue with Routines not shutting off the Orbit Water Valve like what @rabell experienced, I had the same problem and figured out that I was creating Routines to “Open or close valves” and found that the “open” worked fine, but the “close” didn’t. The close appeared in the app “Recently” events, but watching the graph.api live logging, I could see that it was never sent to the Orbit valve. I changed from using “Open or close valves” to using “Turn on these lights or switches” and “Turn off these lights or switches” which resolved the issue for me.

I know this is about a year old but I’d be interested in testing your code. I just started with smarthings and have a rachio irrigation controller and 7 plantlinks. I was wanting to do exactly what you have described… read moisture sensor and turn on value if too low.

I wasn’t familiar with the Rachio, interesting. My app was for a single valve and an all or nothing turn on/off regardless of which Plantlink had a low moisture reading. It looks like the Rachio has 8/16 zones and also integrates Plantlink. Will low moisture automatically trigger a zone to open off a single Plantlink sensor reading? It wouldn’t be too difficult to set this up in my app - i.e. Plantlink 1 sensor detects low moisture so turn on switch/valve 1, etc.
I know this is a very old thread, but I wanted to share my experience for anyone still considering this device. I own two of these and they were operating decently using gussery’s DTH. However occasionally when the batteries were below 50% the device would stop responding. I replaced the batteries with an ac adapter that runs out my window to the valves and they have been working flawlessly ever since. I highly recommend this route if you are still trying to make this solution work.

I use a core piston with (command optimization off) - which sends repeated commands to the valve based on the state of a virtual switch. So I just pick the virtual switch as the valve in the scheduling app. Then the CoRE piston just spams the valve to ensure compliance. Worked great for me last fall. I haven’t set up the sprinklers yet this year. Maybe this weekend.
Don’t know if it is more reliable, but my Orbit valve is located one floor directly below my Smartthing hub. When my hub was further away, I could not get the commands to send reliably, so proximity seems to be key. Where I do have an issue is on the back of my house getting my Smarthings zigbee outlet to reliably repeat the commands.
