Each year, October recognizes Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month to increase awareness of diagnostic medical sonography and the role sonographers play in healthcare. Ultrasound technology has revolutionized prenatal care, playing a crucial role in ensuring healthier pregnancies and better outcomes for both mothers and babies. By providing real-time imaging, ultrasounds allow healthcare providers to monitor the development of the fetus, identify potential complications early, and take proactive steps to address any issues. One of the most significant benefits of ultrasounds is their ability to detect abnormalities that could lead to increased mortality or morbidity if left undiagnosed. Early detection of conditions such as ectopic pregnancies, fetal growth restrictions, and congenital abnormalities enables timely interventions, which can be life-saving for both mother and child. In addition to identifying risks, ultrasounds contribute to positive health outcomes by guiding clinical decisions throughout pregnancy. For example, they help determine the baby’s position, assess the placenta, and monitor amniotic fluid levels, all of which are essential for planning safe deliveries. Beyond the clinical benefits, ultrasounds provide emotional reassurance to expectant parents. Seeing their baby on the screen and hearing the heartbeat creates a strong bond and reinforces the importance of prenatal care. As we recognize Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month, Champion also celebrates the Champions of Care in this field. We are also here to support patients and Labor & Delivery medical staff. Safety. Comfort. Ambiance. Cleanliness. Every aspect of the labor, delivery, and birthing experience can make a lasting impression on new mothers and their families. We do our best to enhance the patient experience by creating a truly welcoming environment. The Augustine, a medical recliner from our Select Collection, is ideal for L&D patient rooms. Earlier this year, The New York Times reported that the FDA had approved a new blood test for colorectal cancer screening that demonstrated the ability to detect 83% of Stage 1, 2, or 3 colorectal cancers in clinical studies. However, this blood test catches only about 13% of dangerous polyps. Colonoscopies, the gold standard in diagnosis because of the ability to find and remove precancerous tissue, find approximately 95% of these polyps. In a recent issue of Oncology News Central, medical oncologist Dr. Amol Akhade explained, "Developing a blood-based test for cancer screening is a goal shared by every oncology researcher. Imagine a simple blood test that could detect precancerous lesions or early-stage cancer in individuals without symptoms. "This would be a significant advantage for both oncologists and patients, potentially lowering cancer-specific mortality over time. The challenge, however, is that the test must be highly sensitive and specific to be clinically valuable. Unfortunately, the recent FDA approval of a blood-based colorectal cancer screening test sets the standard too low, potentially opening a dangerous Pandora's box." The newly approved Shield test has a 65% sensitivity for Stage 1 cancer and a 10.1% false positive rate. Other noninvasive screenings have shown an 88% sensitivity for Stage 1 when using DNA testing and 64% with fecal immunochemical testing. Still, colonoscopies remain the best option for CCR screening and early detection, which is paramount for better health outcomes. Learn more in our latest blog.
Where would you feel most comfortable when having to sit for long periods of time? Studies have shown that home infusion is a growing trend and that the market is expected to grow by 7.2% in the next seven years. It's not hard to figure out why. Home-based therapies are physically and emotionally motivating for patients. Home infusion is a treatment option for patients with a wide range of conditions, ranging from bacterial infections to more complex conditions such as late-stage heart failure, bleeding disorders, dialysis, nutrition support, cancer, and immune deficiencies. Home infusion offers patients independence and better quality of life because it is provided in the comfort of their own home at a time that fits their needs. Other benefits include: ✓ Convenience: There is no coordinating of rides or travel time required. It also isn’t necessary to wait for your appointment. ✓ Energy savings: When you are ill, disabled or recovering from surgery, the last thing you want is to spend your energy getting up/down stairs or in/out of the car. In-home therapy allows patients to save their energy for other aspects of life. ✓ Fully functional: Not only is the therapist teaching the patient new techniques, they are doing it in the patient’s home. This allows the patient to have a more active part in their treatment and can play a role in improving medication adherence. ✓ Encouraging and supportive: The familiarity of the same therapist is comforting to patients, and the partnership formed offers a unique type of support. ✓ Reduced hospital stays: The longer a patient stays in a hospital, the greater the risk of hospital-acquired infection. This is especially the case for patients with compromised immune systems. Home infusion allows patients to receive some or all of their therapy at home, while reducing the harms associated with hospitalization. ✓ Cost savings: Hospital expenses add up quickly and home infusion therapy is a cost-effective alternative to receiving treatment in a hospital. Home infusion can also reduce the amount of time patients stay in a hospital, which in turn, saves patients money. It’s common knowledge that dialysis treatments take time. Less talked about but just as true is the fact that infusion therapy can take a toll on patients and their caregivers. For decades, Champion has understood the clinical treatments and workflows that take place in dialysis settings, engineering medical seating specifically for your facility and patients. As we see this growing trend in the marketplace, Champion is ready to serve patients with the same treatment chairs that we sell to infusion units worldwide. This will afford patients the opportunity to utilize the same high-quality and easy-to-clean product in their home (it arrives fully assembled too!). Probably every ophthalmologist and most eye specialists know what “hooded eyes” are, but most insurance companies consider surgeries to fix the issue a cosmetic procedure. This means they won’t cover the cost, so many patients are left to suffer with something they don’t find aesthetically pleasing — and something that can possibly affect their quality of life. Insurance companies might provide coverage for upper eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, when it is considered medically essential to address a condition that obstructs vision. For example, if the surplus skin on the upper eyelids is limiting a person’s peripheral vision and hindering their ability to engage in everyday tasks such as driving or reading, the surgery could be eligible for coverage. This blog examines two different conditions often lumped together as “hooded eyes,” the causes of drooping eyelids, and some preventative measures.

October is internationally recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM). While many well-intentioned athletes are donning pink socks, jerseys, or hats — and everyday people are busy raising research funds with walks, runs, and pink ribbons — this month can be a painful reminder for those living with the disease (or family members who have lost a loved one to the disease). According to BreastCancer.org, BCAM holds different meanings for different people. For some, it's a poignant reminder — 31 days filled with pink that symbolize a life-altering diagnosis. For others, it's an opportunity to express solidarity with the more than 2 million women worldwide who face this disease each year. While some feel inspired, many people living with breast cancer feel like this awareness month overlooks their experience with the disease. By understanding the goals of this global campaign and the emotions experienced by those living with breast cancer, you can better decide how or if you'd like to participate in the observance. Understanding the goals of an awareness month, a healthcare group, or a medical facility is key when it comes to any kind of design or decor. And Champion is here to help you meet those goals. We work together with Architects and Designers to help improve healthcare design. We consider all stakeholders in the building process — including project leaders, junior and senior architects, interior designers, general contractors, and project owners. Our medical seating products are safe, affordable, and compatible with most facilities' existing equipment and inventory. Our proprietary antimicrobial fabric, Secura, offers extra protection for immunocompromised patients. Discover the design possibilities: https://lnkd.in/ew3s5S5u.

According to projections recently published by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), the United States will face a physician shortage of up to 86,000 physicians by 2036. Data shows that much of the shortage problem is due to toxic work environments that cause doctors to feel undervalued. Medscape's 2024 report on Physician Workplace Culture reveals the leading workplace culture priorities for physicians: 1. A commitment to work-life balance for both physicians and staff (54%) 2. Physician autonomy in patient care (52%) 3. Fostering a positive atmosphere (46%) It's assumed that doctors are highly paid and care most about salary, but that isn't always true. "Compensation is important for attracting top talent, but workplace culture is just as crucial for keeping them," says Kristopher M. Day, MD, a double board-certified general and plastic surgeon. Dr. Day has also learned that "valuing staff input, offering professional development, and maintaining work-life balance are key. When employees feel their voices are heard and their well-being is prioritized, quality of care and patient outcomes improve." Some healthcare administrators may argue that providing physicians with a supportive and positive workplace culture is impractical, if not impossible, given the demands of time, patient care, and dealing with insurance companies. However, physicians recently surveyed by MIT Sloan Management Review strongly disagreed. The survey responses indicate that while organizational leaders might feel overwhelmed by the challenge of addressing toxic workplace cultures, taking steps like reducing unnecessary tasks, clarifying job roles, and granting employees greater control over their work can empower staff and significantly enhance the culture. Champion listens to their customers the way doctors listen to their patients, and the way healthcare staff want to be heard by administration. There could be several reasons why your nurses are leaving your facility or talking about looking for work elsewhere. Maybe you, too, have started wondering if the grass is greener at some other place or in some other role. A primary cause of nurses resigning or taking positions at other hospitals is the chronic underfunding of the healthcare system. Many nurses start their careers because they love medicine and helping people, and they often dedicate a ton of their time and effort to improving the system. However, some veteran nurses eventually decide that the current system can’t be fixed and their only option is to leave. The best solution is one that balances financial obligations, operational best practices, federal and state board regulations, and the finest medical care. While there is an accepted Fundamental Framework of Care that can help nurses level-set expectations and navigate the system, without such a framework in place, nurses will continue to leave in droves.
